A qualitative research on high school students' comprehension of proverbs

In order for individuals to acquire the language and culture they have and to use it effectively, it is necessary to know that language and culture first. Proverbs are one of the most important elements of Turkish culture. In speaking and writing education in terms of strengthening proverbs and ideas, creating effective texts with a few sentences; in listening education in terms of interest and curiosity; These are products that can be used in reading education to make texts more meaningful and facilitate emphasis and intonation. Therefore, the necessity of using proverbs in language teaching and value transfer is accepted. In this study, students' comprehension levels of proverbs in Turkish Literature and Language and Expression textbooks were investigated. The deficiencies in the teaching of proverbs were tried to be determined and solutions were offered for them. Qualitative research design was used in the research. In the study group of the research, there are nine students studying in Kütahya city center. Research data were collected using semi-structured interview technique. The obtained data were analyzed using the content analysis technique. According to the findings of the study, high school students drew attention to the counseling aspect of proverbs. Most of the students stated that they made use of proverbs in their daily conversations when appropriate. Research data were collected using semi-structured interview technique. The obtained data were analyzed using the content analysis technique. According to the findings of the study, high school students drew attention to the counseling aspect of proverbs. Most of the students stated that they made use of proverbs in their daily conversations when appropriate. Research data were collected using semi-structured interview technique. The obtained data were analyzed using the content analysis technique. According to the findings of the study, high school students drew attention to the counseling aspect of proverbs. Most of the students stated that they made use of proverbs in their daily conversations when appropriate.
